Field E+a Galaxies at Intermediate Redshifts (0.3 < Z < 1)
We select E+A candidates from a spectroscopic dataset of ∼ 800 field galaxies and measure the E+A fraction at 0.3 < z < 1 to be 2.7 ± 1.1%, a value lower than that in galaxy clusters at comparable redshifts (11 ± 3%). HST/WFPC2 imaging for five of our six E+A’s shows they have a heterogeneous parent population: these E+A’s span a range in half-light radius (0.8 < r1/2 < 8h −1 kpc) and estimated...
متن کاملGalaxies at High Redshifts
Several conclusions have been reached over the last few years concerning high-redshift galaxies: (1) The excess of faint blue galaxies is due to dwarf galaxies. (2) Star formation peaks at redshifts z ≈ 1 − 2. (3) It appears to occur piecemeal in any given galaxy and there is no evidence for starbursting throughout a large ∼ 10 kpc galaxy. (4) There is significant and sharp diminution in the nu...
متن کاملSpectrophotometric properties of galaxies at intermediate redshifts ( z ~ 0 . 2 – 1 . 0 ) ⋆ II . The Luminosity
We present the gas-phase oxygen abundance (O/H) for a sample of 129 star-forming galaxies at intermediate redshifts (0.2 < z < 1.0). The sample selection, the spectroscopic observations (mainly with VLT/FORS) and associated data reduction, the photometric properties, the emission-line measurements, and the spectral classification are fully described in a companion paper (Paper I). We use two me...
متن کاملGalaxies at high redshifts – observing galaxies in the cradle
Due to the invention of new powerful instruments in the recent past (e.g. 10m class telescopes) high redshift galaxies are no longer a curiosity. High redshift young star forming galaxies can be effectively discriminated from the much more abundant foreground galaxies by their special spectral properties: a prominent break at the Lyman limit (i.e. a complete absence of flux at wavelength below ...
متن کاملOptical Selection of Galaxies at Redshifts
Few galaxies have been found between the redshift ranges z < ∼ 1 probed by magnitude-limited surveys and z > ∼ 3 probed by Lyman-break surveys. Comparison of galaxy samples at lower and higher redshift suggests that large numbers of stars were born and the Hubble sequence began to take shape at the intermediate redshifts 1 < z < 3, but observational challenges have prevented us from observing t...
